The wine program at Crabtree’s Kittle House has reached near legendary proportions. The wine cellar boasts some 75000 bottles and the list offers nearly 7000 different wines to choose from. Storage is impeccable as the cellar is, for the most part, subterranean, and the temperature control is set to never exceed 50 degrees. We have found that the evolution of the wines in the cellar is a long and slow process due to the cellar conditions. The wine list has been the recipient of The Grand Award from The Wine Spectator since 1994 and from The Award of Great Distinction from The Wine Enthusiast since 2006.
The wine list at Crabtree’s Kittle House is a passionate collection of the finest wines made by the most talented winemakers from the greatest wine regions all around the world. The focus of the list has always been on the winemaker first, knowing that when all things are at least close to equal, it’s the ‘chef in the kitchen’ who can make the biggest difference. The best winemakers make their wine in the vineyard, so the place where the grapes are grown and the winemaker’s knowledge of that place are the most important aspects of the equation. Over the years, Crabtree’s Kittle House has been honored to receive many famous and not-so-famous winemaker’s from all around the world as they pass through New York and we are honored to know these incredibly talented people. You will find many of them very well represented on the pages of the list.
The list is full of the famous names of the great winemakers and their wonderful vineyard sites, but you will also see many names that you do not recognize, names of people making wines in places that may not be familiar. These wines are our discoveries, having discovered them either accidentally, perhaps as we travel through a wine region somewhere around the world, or discovered because it has been brought to us by an equally passionate fellow wine person who knows we will find it interesting, delicious and worthy of a place on the list. Discovering something new is how the list has grown to the size that it is today.
